Background

Australians love fashion, but with 200,000 tonnes of clothing sent to landfill each year, it's time for a change.

Improving your fashion habits is not just good for the planet —it's a fun and rewarding way to refresh your style! Australians are known for their love of fashion, but with 56 new items being added to wardrobes each year, we’re also contributing to a growing environmental problem. Fast fashion trends have led to a decrease in how long we keep our clothes. The good news? Small changes can make a big impact!

Check out this short video from ABC about Australia's growing Fashion problem:

Fast Fashion, is everywhere, but what can you do to reduce the demand and prevalence of cheap poor-quality clothes:

  1. Buy Less. Choose Well. Make It Last. The best outfit for the planet is the one you already own. Prioritise quality over quantity. Choose timeless, versatile pieces made to last.
  2. Embrace the Art of Rewearing. Washing less often (especially for items like jeans—every 3 to 10 wears is enough) reduces water use, saves energy, and extends garment life. Spot clean, air out, and wash only when needed.
  3. Swap, Borrow, and Buy Second-Hand. Attend local clothes swaps, check out op shops, or use clothing rental platforms. These options are stylish, sustainable, and full of personality. See our Local Op-Shops map below to find one near you.
  4. Repair, Upcycle, and Get Creative. Mend what you have or give old favourites a new life. Visible mending and DIY alterations are trending - and totally unique.
  5. Support Ethical and Sustainable Brands. If you’re buying new, support businesses committed to ethical practices, sustainable materials, and transparency. Check out Goodonyou.eco to find brands you are familiar with and new ones, each brand is rated based on their sustainable practices and ethical clothing production.
  6. Speak Up for Policy Change. While our consumer choices matter, systemic change is essential. Advocate for regulations that hold fashion brands accountable for human rights, environmental standards, and waste. Encourage government action to close loopholes that allow ultra-cheap, low-quality goods to flood our market.
