Trees and Vegetation

The Southern Highlands has large intact vegetation corridors and patches of bushland on public and private land. This vegetation provides habitat for our local fauna as well as threatened flora and threatened ecological communities.

Before undertaking any vegetation management or tree removal, it is important to review the content found on these pages.

Additionally, there is a plant guide to assist you with revegetation efforts on your property.

If you a landholder with more than half a hectare of bushland on your property, please consider joining the Land for Wildlife program.

Hedges

Hedges are located throughout the Wingecarribee Shire Council local government area. Hedges come in many shapes, sizes and varieties and are often referred to as ‘living fences’. Hedges are also habitat for wildlife particularly birds, insects, and mammals.

Tree Hollows & Bushrock - Homes for Wildlife

Tree hollows form in the trunk or branches of live or dead trees, and usually are found in much older trees, typically 100-150 years old. Because they take so long to form, and are such important habitat for many of our native animal species, it is vital that they are retained wherever possible.

Individual Tree Removal

Take a short 7 question questionnaire to find out whether or not you need to lodge an application to Council (where Council is the approval agency) for approval to remove one or more individual trees from your property.

Our Shire is celebrated for beautiful trees that line our neighbourhood streets, fill our parks and feature in private gardens providing shade and changing colours throughout the year.

There are many choices we can make as gardeners to improve the wildlife habitat of our backyards and gardens, and this includes choosing local native species as decorative, border, screening or highlight plants.

To assist you in lodging your Tree and Vegetation Clearing application with the correct Agency, you can use Council’s Tree and Vegetation Clearing Guide Map to locate your property and obtain specific information on who to contact and what application process may be required.

Tree and Vegetation Management - Council Land

Council understands that trees are living assets, subject to growth, decline and decay. As assets, they will be managed on Council land by adopting a holistic approach that plans for maintenance and renewal, within designated resources and levels of service.

Tree and Vegetation Management - Private Land

Under the NSW Government 2017 Biodiversity Law Reforms, Tree and Vegetation Clearing applications which are not part of, or related to, a development application in the Shire are now handled by different agencies depending on the zoning of your property.

Council has numerous pests and disease affecting the local area. Whilst we are unable to list all pests and diseases affecting the trees and vegetation of our area. This list has been created based on community interest.

Street Tree Audit 2024

Wingecarribee Shire Council, in collaboration with Active Green Services, will conduct a thorough street tree audit across the shire towns and villages starting January 14, 2024. The audit, spanning 6-12 months, aims to collect data and assess the risk of maintenance needs for the Council's street trees.
