Earth Flix Cinema 4 Change

Wilding film screening small.jpg

Our Earth Flix: Cinema 4 Change program was launched on Wednesday, 31 January 2024. Earth Flix was created to promote and share films and documentaries that highlight environmental issues, screened locally to entertain, educate and inspire our community.

The program has received support from many, but special thanks go out to Suzannah Cowley and Nigel Christensen of Nviro Media who have supported every screening and provided excellent short documentaries for multiple events, and to Craig Reucassel for helping get this program off the ground with the soft launch in December 2023.

In the first year, over 1200 people attended our Earth Flix events. Each event includes a short documentary followed by a Q and A with special guests, some local and some involved in the film's creation.

In 2026 we will host 4 more excellent films in cinema, screening once per quarter, and two films screened in school locations across our shire.

In September 2025 the Earth Flix program format was adjusted to extend its reach with the first in-school screening at 3 host schools, screening Rising Up to over 900 students from 8 different schools. The film was followed by a Q and A with Kal Glanznig the film's creator to explore plastic pollution in more detail, and to discuss climate advocacy and how these students can get started.

Upcoming Free Empire Cinema Screenings:

February - Film TBC - Stay tuned for updates

Films screened to date:
Rising Up screened to over 900 students in-school
Rising Up - created by climate advocate Kal Glanznig takes us on a journey through the pacific islands, exploring impacted communities and talking with the climate advocates driving change on these islands and globally. The film is inspirational and delves into the internal drive of these young climate advocates, how they got started and what pushes them forward on their journey.

This first screening of Earth Flix in schools was a massive undertaking with a tight schedule to get from one school location to the next. With over 900 students seeing the film and given the opportunity to ask Kal question in the Q and A, it was truly an event we felt had great impact and an event format we will be continuing into the future.

2025 Films Screened at the Empire Cinema
  • March 19 - Wilding

Wilding captivated audiences with its inspiring true story of a British farm’s transformation through rewilding. Viewers left reflecting on nature’s resilience, the beauty of letting landscapes heal, and the hope that such bold ecological restoration can spark change in communities worldwide. We had an excellent turn out with the cinema being fully booked! Our panel speakers helped bring the film back to our local context with important considerations for soil biodiversity and native plants.

  • June 25 - The Endangered Generation?

The Endangered Generation? left audiences deeply moved, challenging perceptions about humanity’s relationship with the planet. Through powerful stories and urgent science, it inspired reflection, hope, and a renewed commitment to protect Earth’s biodiversity for future generations before it’s too late. Local panel speakers brought in local elements, like how our youth can get involved with nature-based projects, through Landcare and also our Bushcare program at Council. Being in nature is one of the most impactful ways to reconnect to nature.

  • Saturday 9 August - Future Council

Future Council inspired audiences with the passion of eight young changemakers on a mission across Europe. Their bold conversations with global leaders showed how youthful vision can drive real environmental solutions. After the screening, cast member Ruby Rodgers and director Damon Gameau joined Bowral High’s Chloe and Josh for an engaging Q&A. The discussion focused on how youth can act—by working with their schools or local councils to address environmental concerns. Chloe shared her PFAS research, revealing a surprising fact: most dental floss contains PFAS, a key-way microplastics enter our bloodstream—an everyday reminder of hidden environmental impacts.

  • Wednesday 15 October - Night Calling

Night Calling is a magnificent film, with incredible footage of the elusive Masked Owl in the wild. The story followed Dr Boyd Wykes as he observed and captured footage of these beautiful creatures. The film pointed to the impacts of rodenticides on our carnivorous birds and clearly listed those to avoid, the ones which have a delayed effect are some of the worst. Please make sure you avoid using poisons that contain: Brodifacoum, Bromadiolone and Difenacoum (B & D = BAD!). The best option is physical capture of the rodent you are trying to remove.
