Bong Bong Pathway is a 2.5m wide concrete path along the Wingecarribee River floodplain between Moss Vale and Burradoo. Areas of this path are low lying and flat. Several localised areas of the path retain water for weeks after small rain events, preventing the use of the path. Council will be constructing a raised boardwalk in six low-lying locations along the path to improve access during wet periods.

The impacted sections of the pathway are shown below:

Grant Funding

Council has received a grant of $350,000 under the Local Government Recovery Grants to improve drainage of the Bong Bong Cycleway following flooding events. The grant requires that works be completed by 30 June 2024.

Options Considered

Council evaluated several options before deciding to construct a raised boardwalk. Firstly, Council considered the construction of a raised concrete pathway by importing fill material. This would have been a high cost solution that would be very disruptive, and would have impacted drainage paths along the floodplain.

Several combinations of boardwalk options have been considered within the budget available, and the selected option involves a boardwalk that is no higher than 240 mm. The boardwalk will be installed above the existing concrete path, and ramps will be constructed to each of the six raised sections.

This option will improve areas of nuisance flooding within the grant funding allowance. Small areas of the path may be flooded for short periods; however, the serviceability of the path will be significantly improved.

Timing of Construction

Works are in progress.  During construction works, the pathway will be closed to the public between Bong Bong Common and Hurlingham Avenue, Burradoo.

Whilst a re-opening date of mid-July was originally anticipated, the extended wet conditions have resulted in extensive flooding of the lowlying sections of the pathway and progress has been severely disrupted.  The contractor is now making good progress and we hope to re-open the path by mid-August.

Council apologises for the inconvenience to path users.  Once the raised sections are constructed, access for all pathway users will be much improved during wet periods.
