In accordance with the adopted by the NSW Government, local councils are to each establish a Flood Risk Management Advisory Committee to oversee the development of flood studies, risk management studies and plans through the FRM process. The Committee provides important links to state agencies, key stakeholders and the community.
The Committee assists Council in developing and implementing a FRM plan by contributing ideas, professional expertise, experience, and local knowledge. The Committee includes four to six (currently five) community representatives, who are selected based on providing representation for different floodplain areas within Council, their engagement with the community, and personal or professional experience with flooding or floodplain management processes.
The Committee also includes two elected Councillors, as well as representatives from state government agencies including The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the State Emergency Services, and Water NSW. Committee members contribute their knowledge of historical information, local problems, and possible solutions in the formulation of floodplain management policy and strategic direction for the shire.
