Youth Week: Clothes Swap

Clothes Swap - what a great first event!

Australia is now the world’s biggest per capita consumer of clothes, shoes and bags with the average Australian buying around 56 new items each year. Most of these items are ‘fast fashion’, which is cheap and poorer quality, so quickly ends up in landfill.

To combat this, Council’s sustainability team ran a Youth Clothes Swap as part of Council’s Youth Week event at Loseby Park in Bowral. We had donations from at least 20 young people and about 40 looked through the donated clothes. Nearly all the clothes went to a new home, and everyone seemed happy with their haul. While most of the clothes were for girls, we were pleased to see a few boys dropping off clothes and participating in the swap.

For a first-time swap event with our youth, the turn-out was fabulous, however, we went away with some learnings, one of them being including men and promoting it as so for future swap events.

Our next swap event will be held in September, as part of Swap-tember, which will also host a range of other swap related events, stay tuned for more information!

This event was part of the YouthFest Event taking place at Loseby Park in Bowral on Thursday 17 March.
