The next generation of community leaders took centre stage on Tuesday 5 May 2026 as Wingecarribee Shire Council celebrated the achievements of its Youth Council Pilot Program at the Civic Centre in Moss Vale.

Youth Council members joined teachers, principals, Mayor Fitzpatrick and Council staff to mark a year of fresh ideas, strong voices and real impact across the Shire.

Mayor Jesse Fitzpatrick opened the event, praising the confidence and leadership shown by Youth Council members and acknowledging the strong support from schools and staff for the program.

Youth Council members also received certificates recognising their contribution to the pilot program. The event concluded with refreshments and opportunities for participants to share feedback and ideas for the future.

The Youth Council pilot was established to provide young people with a structured and meaningful opportunity to contribute to Council decision-making and community planning.

Throughout the pilot, Youth Council members were instrumental in shaping key initiatives including Council’s Communications and Engagement Strategy and Young Highlands Action Plan. They contributed ideas for a future youth precinct, co-designed a Youth Forum attended by around 75 young people, and provided input into inclusion and community programs.

Members also built skills in leadership, collaboration and civic participation, and made connections with other young people at different schools.

The outcomes and evaluation of the pilot program will be presented to Council in May 2026.
