Wingecarribee Libraries and Meals on Wheels collaborate for new pilot program
Wingecarribee Libraries has partnered with Meals on Wheels to deliver a new pilot program that will expand the library’s popular home library service and help bring books and other library collections directly to more residents across the shire.
The library already offers an in-house home library service for people who are unable to visit in person due to age or disability. With the service close to capacity, staff have been exploring new ways to connect with more readers in the community.
Since January, Meals on Wheels has been delivering a monthly selection of hand-picked books to Meals on Wheels subscribers as part of their regular delivery rounds. Each collection is carefully chosen by library staff based on the reader’s interests and preferences.
Meals on Wheels, Team Leader Debbie Smith said, “This is a great collaboration with Libraries, as at Meals on Wheels, we pride ourselves on being More Than Just A Meal.”
“Being able to offer access to books, magazines, DVD's and more delivered to their homes really is helping our clients feel connected and still part of the community”. Debbie went on to explain, “we have found it really easy working with the libraries team, and the program has been easy to implement.”
By partnering with Meals on Wheels, Wingecarribee Libraries can extend their reach beyond the larger towns and better support people living in smaller villages across the shire.
Wingecarribee Libraries Acting Coordinator, Rebecca Finlaison, said the collaboration makes it possible to reach more residents who may not be able to visit a library branch in person.
“This partnership with Meals on Wheels allows us to reach more members of the community with this service, without requiring additional resources,” she said.
The pilot program highlights the value of local partnerships, helping ensure more people can stay connected to stories, information and lifelong learning, all without needing to step inside a library. This initiative will run for a period of 12 months before being reviewed.
