Wingecarribee Shire Council adopts Sustainable Procurement and Contract Policy
Wingecarribee Shire Council has adopted a new Sustainable Procurement and Contracts Policy, reinforcing its commitment to ethical, fair, and transparent procurement practices while creating more opportunities for local businesses.
The Policy, formally adopted at Council’s September Ordinary Meeting, provides a clear framework for how Council sources works and services, with a strong focus on integrity, accountability, and compliance with relevant laws and regulations. It also places emphasis on achieving value for community through whole-of-life costing and ensuring that procurement delivers positive outcomes for the local economy and community.
General Manager Lisa Miscamble said the Policy reflects Council’s ongoing efforts to strengthen connections with local businesses and foster economic growth across the Shire.
“This policy demonstrates Council’s commitment to working collaboratively with our local business community,” Ms Miscamble said.
“Over the past year we’ve hosted three Local Contractor Procurement Workshops and updated our procurement information to make it easier for local suppliers to understand how to tender for Council projects. These steps, along with the new policy, will make our processes more transparent and accessible while encouraging local participation.”
The Policy includes provisions to engage Social and Indigenous enterprises, addresses modern slavery risks, and promotes sustainable procurement practices.
GROW Southern Highlands representative Greg Welsh, who assessed the draft Policy during its public exhibition period, said he was pleased with its direction and scope.
“This Policy provides a strong foundation for fair and sustainable procurement while creating real opportunities for local businesses,” Mr Welsh said.
“By balancing value for community with a genuine focus on social and environmental outcomes, Council is setting a positive example for other organisations.”
During its development, Council engaged with key local business groups, including GROW Southern Highlands, Business Southern Highlands, WinZero and the Robertson Business Chamber to gather feedback and ensure the Policy aligns with local needs.
