Project works

Works for this project are expected to commence from mid-October 2025 and last for 12 weeks. The works will include:

Stormwater pit and pipe installations
Dish Drain, Kerb and Gutter constructions
Service relocations
Tree removals
Driveway reconstructions
Reconstruction of road pavement

Background

Bessemer Street is a two-lane sealed road with a speed limit of 50km/hr. The section of road from Bowral Road to Regent Street and to 42 Regent Lane is in poor condition, with issues including poor drainage, a failed road surface, missing kerb and gutter, shallow services, and flooding during high rainfall events.

The scope of the works includes re-sheeting with a new asphalt wearing course, base replacement and stormwater pipe installations. New pavement is sought for approximately 120 metres from Bowral Road to Regent Street and 110 metres to Regent Lane. The works also include the construction of new stormwater drainage, pavement reconstruction, driveway adjustments, service relocations, footpath, and kerb and gutter installations.

Bessemer Street is a busy road that is often used to access the Mittagong Town Centre, Bowral and Old Hume Highway. It is the major access road to businesses, including Mittagong Town Centre, Mittagong RSL Club, SES, McDonald's, Ampol, Auto, Bowral, construction material/equipment suppliers, Council Water and Sewer Department and the residents.

Access for emergency services and the residents will be maintained throughout the works. The construction works will be staged to ensure minimal disruption and inconvenience to road users and neighbouring properties.

Community impacts

The section of the road will be fully closed from Bowral Road to Regent Street. Road users and pedestrians are cautioned to be aware of heavy machinery and workers in the area, follow the changed traffic conditions and exercise care when travelling through the work zones. Access to the emergency vehicles will be maintained during construction.
