Wingecarribee Shire Council is pleased to announce that refurbishment works at the Mittagong Memorial Hall/Playhouse have commenced.

The $8.66 million project is being delivered through a joint funding arrangement, with the Australian Government contributing $4.33 million through the Growing Regions Program and Wingecarribee Shire Council matching this investment with a further $4.33 million.

The works will carefully restore the heritage-listed building and address structural, safety, and accessibility issues. They will also deliver targeted upgrades to boost performance capacity and community use, creating a modern, high-quality cultural facility that preserves the Playhouse’s historic character.

Mayor Jesse Fitzpatrick said the long-awaited refurbishment was a significant milestone for the region’s cultural life.

“Once complete, the Playhouse is expected to attract around 8,000 visitors each year and generate approximately $1.5 million in economic activity for Mittagong Town Centre,” said Mayor Fitzpatrick.

“It will bring the broader community together and give local performers a safe, modern space to showcase their talent.”

The Federal Member for Whitlam, Carol Berry MP, said the Growing Regions Program invests in infrastructure across Australia’s regional, rural and remote areas to enhance liveability, bolster social cohesion and support local amenity.

“I am delighted the Albanese Labor Government is delivering on its commitment to invest $4.33 million to restore the Mittagong Memorial Playhouse,” she said. “The transformed cultural centre will provide a wonderful venue for the Southern Highlands community for decades to come.”

Construction will be undertaken by Corporate Interior Projects Pty Ltd and is expected to be completed in December 2026.

During construction, residents and visitors can expect increased noise and temporary changes to traffic and pedestrian access along Main Street.

Parking in front of the Regal Centre and adjoining businesses will shift from 90-degree to 45-degree parking, with the car park operating one-way from Bowral Road towards Main Street. Pedestrian access around the Playhouse will be temporarily diverted via Bowral Road.

Street trees will be carefully trimmed for the duration of the project to allow access for scaffolding and building façade works, while a tree removed from the Bowral Street side will be replaced once the project is complete.

Once the project is complete, the six car parks currently blocked by wall supports will be returned to community use.
