Volunteering at the Shelter

Here at the shelter we have a large number of committed volunteers.
Some attend weekly to either walk the dogs and/ or socialise with the cats and kittens. Others volunteer their time when and where they can.

Volunteer Roles at the shelter:

Our dog walkers attend the shelter from 8.30 am- 9.30 am/10 am depending on the number of dogs and volunteers on the day.

Dog walkers are welcome 7 days a week at this time, except public holidays and days the shelter is closed to the public.

We assess what dogs suit each volunteer and provide vests, dog treats, harnesses, toys and leads.

Cat cuddling happens from 10.30 am-3 pm, Mon- Fri and 10 am-12 noon Saturday and Sunday. Closed public holidays/ days the shelter is closed to the public. This includes socialising with kittens and cats. It is just as important for cats to be comfortable with new people as it is for the dogs. The volunteers offer great experiences and enrichment for the animals. This assists the animals become more adoptable. Cat treats and toys are available for volunteers to use while in the cattery.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Wingecarribee Animal Shelter please call (02) 4868 1520.

Alternatives to Euthanasia Policy

Wingecarribee Animal Shelter is operated on a philosophy of minimal euthanasia. This means giving every companion animal that arrives at the Shelter good care and the opportunity when it is viable to be re-homed without the threat of being subject to arbitrary euthanasia after the minimum holding period.

This policy:

  • Aims to minimise the euthanasia of companion animals impounded at the Wingecarribee Animal Shelter by considering all possible alternatives to euthanasia and where practicable, to adopt these alternatives on every occasion.
  • Recognises that euthanasia of feral and infant companion animals within the minimum holding period may be necessary when advised by a veterinarian.
  • Complies with Sections 64 and 64A of the Companion Animals Act 1998 (the ‘Act’)
