Bin Placement Guidelines
- Place your bins on the kerbside the night before your collection day
- Make sure your bins are presented at least 50 cm apart
- Do not overfill your bins:

- Ensure your bins do not weigh more than 70 kg each
- Place your bins on the kerbside with the Council Logo facing the road.
- Ensure there are no cars, trees or overhead wires blocking access to your bins.
- Remove your bins from the kerbside as soon as possible after they have been serviced.
Wingecarribee Shire Council offers a range of sizes and collection frequencies of red lidded bins to help residents better manage their waste.
Available bin sizes include: 80 L, 140 L, 240 L, with the standard option being 80 L.
While these bins are usually collected weekly, residents can reduce costs by opting for a fortnightly collection of the 80 L red lidded bin. Collection would be on the same day as the yellow lidded recycling bin.
What Goes in Your Red Lidded Bin?
The general waste bin (red lidded bin) is the waste or garbage collection bin, used to dispose of items that cannot be recycled or re-used and that is destined for landfill. The following items can be placed in your general waste bin;
- Styrofoam packaging and food containers
- Broken ceramics, crockery and glassware
- Soft plastics including plastics bags, plastic wraps, chip packets and chocolate wrappers
- Kitchen food scraps (we recommend composting or worm farming to help reduce food waste sent to landfill)
What Should Not Be Placed in Your Red Lidded Bin?
A number of items should not placed in the general waste bin, as they may be harmful to human health and the environment. The following items should NOT be placed in your general waste bin;
- Construction materials and waste
- Medical waste e.g. syringes
Dangerous or problem waste can be taken to the Resource Recovery Centre and Community Recycling Centre to be recycled and disposed of correctly, to reduce contamination, divert waste from landfill and protect the environment and human health.
Conditions of Your General Waste Service
Only household waste should be placed in your red lidded bin. The bin lid should be completely closed. All bins need to be removed from the kerb by residents as soon as possible after emptying. If your bin is damaged please contact 02 4868 0888 to arrange repairs.

You can remove food scraps from your garbage bin and help the environment by setting up a compost bin or worm farm at home.
Single use plastic bags are incredibly damaging to the environment and it is best to ensure you avoid them when shopping at the supermarket.
However, if you do have some, you can return them to most supermarkets where they will recycle them. This ensures that they aren’t being sent to landfill, where they will not break down and cause permanent environmental damage.

What Goes in Your Yellow Lidded Bin?
The recycling bin (yellow lidded bin) is the collection bin used to dispose of items that are recyclable, to be made into new products and used again. The following items can be placed in your recycling bin;
- Plastic containers and bottles
- Steel and aluminium cans and tins
What Should Not Be Placed in Your Yellow Lidded Bin?
A number of items should not be placed in the recycling bin as they can contaminate the recycling stream and impact the recycling machinery. The following items should NOT be placed in your recycling bin;
- Styrofoam packaging and food containers
- Hazardous chemicals and chemical containers
- Any items smaller than a credit card
- Coffee cups (these are plastic lined, which cannot be separated in the recycling process)
- Soft plastics including plastics bags, plastic wraps, chip packets and chocolate wrappers
Helpful Hints
Recycling plastics can be complicated. Plastic can be made from a variety of different materials and depending on this material and how it is made will contribute to how it can be recycled. The basic idea is if it is hard enough to be unable to poke a hole through with your finger, but also flexible enough to be twisted, then it is recyclable.

Your green lidded bin is a 240 L bin, collected fortnightly.
This garden organics collection service allows residents to divert garden waste from around the home and away from landfill, thereby reducing the production of the greenhouse gas methane.
The recovered garden waste will be processed into a range of mulch products. This process meets AS4454-2012 Australian standards.
What can go into your Green bin?
The garden organics bin (green lidded bin) is the collection bin used to dispose of household garden organic waste to be converted into soil conditioner.
The following items can be placed in your garden organics bin;
- Grass clippings
- Leaves (fresh or dry)
- Agapanthus (whole plant)
- Flowers and plant off-cuts
- Prunings, twigs and branches
- Bark
What should not go in the Green bin?
A number of items should not be placed in the garden organics bin as they can contaminate the stream and reduce the effectiveness of the end product.
The following items should not be placed in your garden organics bin;
- Food scraps and leftovers
If your bin collection has been missed, your bin is damaged or your bins have been stolen, log a request here or contact 1300 133 969.
Calls received before 12 pm can be collected on the same day. For any calls after 12 pm, missed bins will be collected the following day. Missed bin collections need to be reported within 48 hours of the missed service.
Reduce the risk of a missed bin collection service by ensuring that you place your bin out for collection the night before your designated collection day.

4. Why does your bin lid need to be closed?
Please close your bin lids when placing on the kerbside. This prevent items from blowing out of the bin, prevents items from falling out of the bin when it is being emptied and stops animals from getting into the bin, pulling rubbish out of the bin or knocking the bin over.
5. Why do we need to put the bins out this way?
Bin requirements for collection, including spacing, timing and weight limits, help to reduce missed bins and streamline collections. However, expected changes to the schedule, can still occur, including sick drivers and trucks breaking down.
6. Why was a sticker placed on my bin saying it was too heavy?
Please ensure bins placed on the kerbside for collection do not weigh more than 70 kg. This limit is in place as this is the highest weight our trucks can collect.
7. What if my bin collection was missed?
You can report a missed bin service through contacting JR Richards on 1300 133 969.
Calls received before 12 pm can be collected on the same day. Calls about missed bins received after 12 pm will be collected the following day.

9. Why can’t I put food in my green bin?
Food scraps cannot be placed in the green lidded bin, which is for garden organics only.
10. Why can’t I put my recycling in bags?
Once your recycling is collection from the kerbside, it is taken to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where the five different materials (steel, glass, paper and cardboard, aluminium and glass bottles and jars) are separated by a combination of hand sorters and machinery. When recyclable materials are placed in to a bag they can't be separated into their respective material types and end up in landfill. It is too dangerous and time consuming for hand sorters to open plastic bags.
