Seniors Festival 2019

Please see below for the full programme of events for this year's Senior's Festival 2019. Booking details are listed under each event.

Many events involve a certain level of physical activity. You are encouraged to discuss your fitness limitations with the event organiser if you are unsure whether these events would be suitable for you.

Bus Trips

Active Mystery Bus Trip 

When:   Thursday 14 February 8am – 6pm
Where:  Mystery day out with a visit to some great locations.
Cost:  $20 contribution payable on the day


Get out and about for a busy day of walking, adventure and exploration. Morning tea and lunch stops. Medium level of fitness required for walking and getting on and off the bus multiple times.


Limit of 2 tickets per booking and one bus trip per person.

Leisure Mystery Bus Trip 


When: Thursday 21 February 9am – 4pm
Where:  Mystery day out with a scenic drive and a short walk.
Cost:  $15 contribution payable on the day


Take it easy and have a relaxing day out with a scenic drive and an afternoon walk. Morning tea and lunch stops. Minimum stops and limited walking.


Limit of two tickets per booking and one bus trip per person.

Concerts

Putting on the Ritz – Irving Berlin Jazz Show


When:  Saturday 16 February 2pm – 4pm
Where:  Bowral Memorial Hall, Bendooley Street, Bowral 

(accessible by wheelchair, accessible toilet)
Cost:  FREE 


Irving Berlin has been noted as one of the greatest song writers of our time. Many of Berlin’s songs feature in the Great American Songbook, such as “Cheek to Cheek”, “Blue Skies” and “Let’s Face the Music and Dance”. The Ben Jones Jazz Quartet will perform a variety of Berlin's tunes in their own unique swinging style.

This show will take you back in time where Broadway was huge and guarantees to not disappoint!

Swinging out of Vegas


When:  Sunday 24 February 2pm to 4pm
Where:  Bowral Memorial Hall, Bendooley Street, Bowral

For this concert, the Southern Highlands Concert Band will be dipping into the song book of the Rat Pack, performing music associated with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and others. There’s a strong hint of Vegas about this concert and the singers whose music we will reference all have a strong association with the desert city. There’s even a chance of some Elvis! Naturally, for a program of this nature, the band will be joined by everybody’s favourite baritone, Stephen Wheatley. Don’t miss this one!!

Exhibitions

Art for Life

Art works which showcase the talent and diversity of the members of the Bowral District Art Society.

Expos

Love your Life! – Leisure and Travel Expo

When:  Wednesday 13 February 10am –2pm
Where:  Mittagong RSL Club, Mittagong

Cost:   Free

The expo will be a community event that showcases the range of leisure and travel opportunities for people over 60 years of age in the Southern Highlands.


Explore a huge range of leisure and travel activities in one handy location: from sport and recreation groups, to art, craft, music, leisure, cultural, performing arts, hobby, social and 'special interest' groups. Local leisure groups will be promoting their clubs and groups and inviting you to join in their activities. 

Helloworld Bowral the local travel professionals will be showcasing all things travel related. They have many years of experience and can help you with any travel getaway.

Everyone is welcome.

Information Sessions

Demystifying Your Energy Bills


When:  Friday 15 February 10am – 12pm
Where:  Mittagong RSL Club, Mittagong

The Energy and Water Ombudsman NSW will be presenting information on common complaints, eligible energy rebates, energy comparisons and what to do if problems occur, with case examples. Hear also about your rights, new initiatives and changes that have improved the energy sector over the past few years. The No Interest Loans Scheme will also be discussed.


Come along to the workshop and learn how to lower your overall energy use, improve your energy efficiency and reduce the cost of your energy bills.

Extreme Weather - building resilience in seniors

Extreme weather as a result of global warming is guaranteed to be a part of our lives in the future. 


This workshop presented by our frontline experts in Emergency Management will deliver simple but critical strategies for anyone who wants to stay safe and be prepared for whatever the weather may throw at us.

Leisure
Come and Try Aqua Therapy

When:  Wednesday 20 February 9.30am
Where:  Moss Vale War Memorial Aquatic Centre, 8 Kirkham Road, Moss Vale 

(accessible by wheelchair, accessible toilet)

Cost:  FREE


A series of gentle exercises, perfect for those with muscle and joint injuries or limitations. A great fun way to keep fit and meet new people. Suitable for non-swimmers through to experienced aqua goers.

 
This class is for current non-members with morning tea after the class.

Come and Try Croquet


When:   Thursday 14 February 9.30am – 12.30pm

Where:  Southern Highlands Croquet Club, Exeter Road, Exeter

Cost:  $10 per playing visitor


Two half day sessions to come along and try the game of croquet. Basic techniques and an outline of the game will be taught, mallets provided. A fun way to meet new people.


Wear flat covered shoes, no sandals and a sun hat. Bring your own refreshments or visit The Exeter General Store which is directly across the road.

Senior’s Gym

Instructors will lead you through a variety of exercises aimed at maintaining cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility. Class can be tailored to individual needs.

FREE entry for seniors to the pool and gym during the Seniors Festival for swimming and personal gym use only. Please sign in at reception and show staff your Pension Card or NSW Seniors Card.

Come and Try Yoga and Meditation

In this session Fiona will take you through a few gentle yoga stretches to prepare for a guided meditation practice that helps to relax the body and calm the mind. For the most of the movements and meditation we will be seated.

Library Heritage Walk

Meet at Mittagong Library to enjoy an easy, short heritage walk around Lake Alexandra and return to Mittagong Library for morning tea and a tour of the mobile library. Please bring a hat and sunscreen.

Come along to this intergenerational event with afternoon tea, a walk around the lake, music and a sausage sizzle BBQ. Join us at the picnic tables under the shelter or BYO picnic blanket and enjoy the great outdoors.

Cupán Tae Irish Morning Tea

Join us at Bowral Library for the screening of The Farmer’s Cinematheque, followed by morning tea.

For more than fifty years, Relvy Teasdale and his son John made beautiful films on their farm and within their small community in the Wimmera region of Australia. For the Teasdales farming and film-making were interrelated practices, offering insight into a world that on one hand seems to be disappearing, but on the other continues to sustain, adapt and recreate itself. Their luminous archive connects past and present generations, revealing the rhythms and rituals of life on the land.
