Video Commission is a research and residency project created in partnership with Shark Island Institute.

Pictured: 'Brief Illuminations' by Kate Blackmore and Diana Baker Smith.

The brief is to commission, research, and discover what we can do together that we could not do alone.

The project pairs eight contemporary artists: Kate Blackmore & Diana Baker Smith, James Vaughan & Tom Polo, Matthew Griffin & Heath Franco, and Tony Albert & Serwah Attafuah.

You can view these artists' work for the duration of the 2023 Seniors Festival at Ngununggula Regional Gallery from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm from Monday-Sunday, with daily tours from 11:00 am.

No bookings required.

This venue is physically accessible.

About the Artists

Kate Blackmore is is an Australian artist and filmmaker who has written, directed and produced more than 25 short documentaries about art and culture for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, including The Art of Collecting and the Walkley Award-nominated series The Movement.

Diana Baker Smith is an artist and lecturer in the School of Art and Design at the University of New South Wales. Based on Gadigal land in Sydney, her artistic practice is highly collaborative, research driven, and underpinned by feminist methods.

James Vaughan is an independent writer and filmmaker from Sydney whose short film You Like It, I Love It (2013) won praise for its subtlety and originality. In Melbourne, he received the Swinburne Award for Emerging Australian Filmmaker.

Tom Polo uses painting to explore how conversation, doubt and gesture are embodied acts of portraiture. Frequently incorporating text and figurative elements, his works draw upon acute observations, absurdist encounters, personal histories and imagined personas.

Matthew Griffin is an Australian artist whose practice engages a wide range of media including sculpture, photography, video, installation and collage. In recent projects he has examined the way humour functions in both a visual and narrative form, and the ethical dilemmas associated with the production of contemporary art.

Heath Franco is a Cooma-born Sydney artist whose practice is based primarily in video. His videos are structured with respect to flow and rhythm, rather than traditional plot narrative, and aim to attract and repulse the viewer through a mix of hyper-aesthetic, catchy jingles and absurd, grotesque performances.

Tony Albert combines text, video, drawing, painting and three-dimensional objects to examine the legacy of racial and cultural misrepresentation, particularly of Australia’s Aboriginal people. Albert has developed a "universal language" that seeks to rewrite historical mistruths and injustice.

Serwah Attafuah is a multidisciplinary artist and musician based on Dharug land in western Sydney. She creates surreal cyber dreamscapes and heavenly wastelands, populated by afro-futuristic abstractions of self with strong ancestral and contemporary themes.
