Petition Template

Members of the public are able to lodge a petition with Council.

Guidelines

For a petition to be considered by Council, it should:

  • Be legibly written or typed
  • Have a detailed description of the request of the Council
  • Clearly show the full name, address and signature of every signatory
  • Be written in a manner that is courteous, and
  • Not be disrespectful to the Council or individuals.

While all petitions will be listed for Council information, failure to follow these guidelines may negatively affect the perceived legitimacy of your petition.

A template has been provided for your convenience below. If you wish to use or design your own petition, please ensure the document meets the requirements listed above.

Please note that there is additional specific criteria that must be met if you wish to ask your local Member of Parliament to table a petition on your behalf for consideration by the State Government. Refer towww.parliament.nsw.gov.au/about/getinvolved/Pages/Petition-the-Parliament.aspx for further information.

Circulation

Petitions lodged with Council will be listed on the agenda of the next available Ordinary Meeting of Council. The listing will include a brief description of the purpose of the petition and the number of signatories to it. To maintain privacy the names, addresses or signatures of the persons who have signed the petition will not be included in the Council meeting agenda.

A copy of the petition will also be placed in the Councillors’ Room (for their information) and circulated to relevant Council officers.
