2019 AUSTRALIA DAY AMBASSADOR 

Mr David Bitton    

International chef, author, businessman and public speaker David Bitton is set to join Wingecarribee’s Australia Day celebrations this January as the Shire’s 2019 Australia Day Ambassador.

David was born in Paris and trained as a chef from age 15 in the French city before moving to a number of fine dining establishments across Europe.

Fate brought David to Australia in 1991 where he took up a position in The Treasury at The Intercontinental. He then moved to further restaurants on Hayman Island and Melbourne before returning to Sydney in 1996 as Head Chef for The Gekko restaurant at the Sheraton on the Park. It was here that David met his wife Sohani and together the pair founded Bitton in 2000.

Since then the business has grown with the launch of a product range of the same name, a small business consultancy and the opening of The Bitton Café and Grocer at Alexandria and more recently in Oatley.

Despite his success David has maintained an ‘open house’ philosophy and approach to food whereby guests are made to feel as if they’re coming home and can relax and enjoy their meal in the company of good friends.

David admits that the story so far has not been without its lows however those experiences have only fuelled his plans for the future which he will share with guests at his Australia Day address.

David’s address is sure to be one of the highlights of the Shire’s official 2019 Australia Day celebrations which start from 9.30am at the Berrima Court House. 

Wingecarribee Shire Mayor, Councillor Duncan Gair said he looked forward to meeting Mr Bitton.

“David has an amazing backstory working in some of the finest dining establishments across Europe and Australia,” he said.

“I can’t wait to hear of some of those kitchen tales, how he ultimately came to our shores and of his inspirations and plans moving forward.”

Australia Day Events & Celebrations

On the 26th January, Berrima comes to life as the Wingecarribee Shire celebrates Australia Day. 

  Australia Day Program 2019

The morning commences at 9.30am with the official Australia Day Ceremony at the historic Berrima District Court house.

Welcome new citizens to our Shire and meet the Australia Day Ambassador.

During the ceremony the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year will be announced.

At 11:00am join us for morning tea and lamingtons on the grounds for this historic building.

12 noon - See Classic cars, fire engines, and much more in a street paraded that is a highlight of the Australia Day celebrations.  

Following the parade, relax for the afternoon and enjoy the entertainment, food and market stalls in the Market Place or browse the many stores that Berrima has to offer.

BERRIMA ROAD CLOSURES - Australia Day

• The Grand Parade for Australia Day 2019 will take place in Berrima on Saturday, 26 January.

• Oxley Street will be closed to traffic from the Old Hume Highway at 9:00 am and residents are advised to use Schotts Lane and Wingecarribee Street.

• The parade will form up in Oxley Street near Berrima Public School from 11:15 am and at 12:00 noon will proceed south along the Old Hume Highway to Jellore Street where it will disperse around the park at approximately 1:00 pm.

• The Old Hume Highway between Oxley Street and Oldbury Road will be closed from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm while the parade takes place.

• The side streets abutting the closed section of the Old Hume Highway will be re-opened to traffic as soon as the parade passes.
