A photographic exhibition highlighting works by local photographers showcasing some of the "at-risk" heritage of the Southern Highlands will be displayed at the Civic Centre Atrium at Moss Vale for the duration of the 2023 Seniors Festival.

The National Trust exhibition No Time to Spare, Southern Highlands was displayed at the Civic Centre Atrium at Moss Vale for the duration of the 2023 Seniors Festival. This exhibition highlighted some of the heritage of the Highlands through a collection of photographs created by Southern Highlands photographers, including Moss Vale's Richard Batterley whose images are featured below.

The No Time to Spare, Southern Highlands photographic collection was on display from 14 January 2023 to 24 February 2023.

Local historical fiction writer AnneMarie Doust is thrilled to have won a striking print of her choice from the No Time To Spare exhibition in The Atrium.

Heritage photographer Richard Batterley recently presented AnneMarie with his image of a cart in farmland at the heritage site on Hillview Estate where it was captured.

“Thank you so much! I raised my family here in the Highlands and love its rich local history,” AnneMarie said.

“I was particularly taken by the exhibition as an author of historical fiction, currently writing my 33rd book under my pen name, AnneMarie Brear.”

The competition was open to everyone who subscribed to our Your Shire e-news during the No Time To Spare exhibition in The Atrium of our Civic Centre in Moss Vale from 14 January to 24 February 2023.

Sixty-nine people entered the draw. AnneMarie chose Richard Batterley’s evocative image of a cart, boldly accented in gold, photographed in farmland at Hillview Heritage Estate in Sutton Forest.

“Because I felt it fit with my historical stories so well. My latest release The Distant Legacy is the third book in a series set in 19th Century Southern Highlands.”

AnneMarie said the print will be a treasured piece of art in her home.

The image was selected from among 25 beautifully curated photographs of heritage sites across Wingercarribee Shire that are at risk of being lost to future generations. The aim of the exhibition was to compel people to take steps to protect the remarkable history of our region.

Photographer Richard Batterley was delighted that AnneMarie was touched by one of his favourite images of local heritage.

“Adding that accent of colour for dramatic effect was to make key aspects of the site stand out,” Richard said.

“I wanted it to make an impression that conveyed a sense of urgency to work together to protect the heritage we all admire and love.”

Bringing the exhibition to our Atrium at Moss Vale provided locals with the opportunity to view some of our Shire’s valued heritage sites in a whole new light.

“One more way of bringing our community together is what The Atrium is all about as an exhibition and gathering space,” said Wingecarribee Shire Council General Manager Lisa Miscamble.

“It was important to me that the Council team really appreciated and supported what I set out to achieve for the whole community with this exhibition,” Richard Batterley said.

“We worked well together to bring this experience to life for locals and AnneMarie’s excitement to take a piece of local heritage home is the icing on the cake.”
