Better late than never exhibition in the Foyer Gallery

Last modified: September 30, 2009 - 8:57 AM

Ken Attfield of Colo Vale turned 90 last year but that hasn't stopped him from following his calling to be an artist.

An exhibition of his work, Better Late Than Never,  has opened in Wingecarribee Shire Council's Foyer Gallery in the Civic Centre Moss Vale.

When Mr Attfield was 70, he and his wife took a course with TAFE at the Old Boys Home in Mittagong which was free to pensioners.  The course was Design and Colour from which he obtained a 1st in Stage 2 Design and Colour.

When TAFE moved to Moss Vale, and these free courses were no longer available, his wife found an art class at Picton that she used to attend by herself.  But in 2007, his wife failed her driving test so he began to take her to the classes.

"After a few weeks of this," says Mr Attfield, "I thought I  would try my hand at oil painting instead of sitting around waiting for her... the results are now hanging on my wall."

Ken mainly paints Australian landscapes.  In his other work, he has started to use coloured pencils and pastels as well as lino-cuts and etchings.

"For a while now, I have been doing what I call my geometrics and they comprise designs using triangular shapes and circles.  The works are done with artists' coloured pens.  I have also done collages and have been a photographer for many years."

A selection of Ken's work is presently on exhibition in the Foyer Gallery until 30th October.

The Foyer Gallery is in the Civic Centre, Elizabeth Street Moss Vale and is open 8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Friday.  Admission is free.
