Bert Flugelman sculpture puts Bowral on the national cultural mapLast modified: August 20, 2009 - 12:01 AM
Bowral will soon join the National Gallery, the Adelaide Festival Centre, the Commonwealth Law Courts, the University of Wollongong and the University of NSW as one of the locations of the national collection of Bert Flugelman sculptures. By spring this year, a sculpture design donated by Mr Flugelman will have been fabricated and installed in Corbett Plaza. Chair of the Wingecarribee Shire Council Arts and Culture Board, Councillor Juliet Arkwright, said that Mr Flugelman, who now resides in Burradoo, is considered one of the most influential Australian sculptors of the twentieth century. "Last year he offered a gift of one of his designs to the shire and this generous gift has now been accepted by the council," said Councillor Arkwright, advising that Mr Flugelman has already started working with Mittagong firm JCA Steel Fabrication on the project of building and installing the sculpture. An amount of $35,000 needed to be found to complete the fabrication and installation. The Arts and Culture Board of Council has contributed $15,000 and an anonymous local donor has contributed a further $5000. "Other small donations are also coming in towards the $15,000 that still needs to be raised," says Councillor Arkwright who has appealed to the Wingecarribee community to get behind this community fund raising effort. "One really good way to support this project is by attending a major fundraising cocktail party, to be held on the evening of Friday 28th August at the Milk Factory Gallery in Bowral," said Councillor Arkwright, suggesting this event will be a wonderful opportunity for the local community to celebrate and contribute to the Flugelman sculpture project. Guests will be welcomed by the vibrant soulful musical performance of the Zjalu duo made up of Christine Jarczewski (viola, violin) and Louise Bell (harp, percussion, vocals). The music will be accompanied by a range of wine generously donated by 5th Chapter Estate Winery of Avoca and delicious finger food will be served by the Milk Factory Gallery Cafe. Gillian McCracken, local freelance arts curator and writer is the special guest speaker on the subject of the importance of public art. Gillian joined the Australia Council in 1986 and was a Program/Policy Manager, Visual Arts/ Craft until 1995. During this period she was responsible for the development of a range of initiatives to support craft incentive programs, national public art policy, statistical surveys of artists and craftspeople and arts marketing studies. In 1996 she began a 13 year career as a freelance curator, arts writer, arts management advisor and researcher, and teacher. Her first curating achievement was Process and Obsession at Performance Space, Sydney 1996. This has been followed by more than 20 exhibitions, a number of which have toured nationally. Gillian became a part-time teacher of Cultural Productions at Moss Vale TAFE in 2009. A special part of the evening will be an auction of two works donated by prominent local artists - Glen Preece and Max Miller. The maquette (model) of the Bert Flugelman sculpture will also be auctioned with the successful bidder asked to make the maquette available for public exhibition from time to time. This will be a particularly precious item to own. The Bert Flugelman Public Sculpture Fundraiser Cocktail party is at 6pm-8pm in the Milk Factory Gallery 31 Station Street Bowral on Friday 28th August. The cost is $50 per person and bookings can be made at the Milk Factory on 02 4862 1077 or gallery@milkfactorygallery.com.au. The event is being presented by the Arts and Culture Board of Wingecarribee Council with the assistance of the Milk Factory Gallery. "I thank the Milk Factory Gallery for their support and I also thank the other people who have provided such generous support for this exciting project, including the Southern Highland News and the 5th Chapter Estate Winery. It has been terrific," she said. If you are unable to attend the fundraiser but would like to make a donation, please contact Jenny Kena at Council on 4868 0855 or jenny.kena@wsc.nsw.gov.au or call in to the office of the Southern Highland News in Wingecarribee Street Bowral.
