RailCorp moves quickly to address anti-social behaviour in Moss Vale

Last modified: July 1, 2009 - 11:51 AM

Chair of the Wingecarribee Community Safety Committee and council's General Manager Mike Hyde has praised the prompt action by RailCorp to address vandalism and anti social behaviour on and around the Moss Vale railway station.

"As a result of some nasty incidents coinciding with the Moss Vale Show earlier this year and some threatening behaviour in the months after, RailCorp moved very quickly to extend their normal security around the railway station to provide protection for train travelers, railway staff and the wider community who were getting caught up in this anti social behaviour," said Mr Hyde, who also praised police from the Local Area Command for implementing targeted strategies in the area.

"RailCorp has indicated it will continue to work closely with the Local Area Command, Bowral Police and Council's Community Safety Committee to help create a secure environment at Moss Vale," said Mr Hyde, who indicated the council is also reviewing any additional security initiatives it needs to implement.

Earlier this year the council introduced a vandalism reward scheme to encourage people to provide information that leads to the conviction of people responsible for vandalism or committing willful damage (including graffiti) to council property, equipment, shrubs, trees and plants in parks and gardens, public recreation areas, streets and other public places in the shire.

"This policy will provide a reward of up to $2,500 to members of the community for providing information regarding vandalism or damage to Council property provided that information results in a conviction being recorded against the offender," said Mr Hyde, who believes this initiative, "may make vandals think twice before committing offences on our community property, knowing that their mates might dob them in to collect a reward."

"We urge people to report crime to the police and if you are able provide information regarding vandalism or damage to Council property that leads to a conviction you may be rewarded for your efforts," he said.
