Mayor supports Angus Youth Roundup for Moss ValeLast modified: February 13, 2009 - 1:26 PM
A committee of local cattle breeders is working hard to bring the 2010 Angus Youth Roundup to Moss Vale next January and Wingecarribee Mayor Duncan Gair is throwing his support behind the proposal. "Should the local organizing committee be successful in winning the event we would see possibly 400 to 500 young people and their parents come to Moss Vale from across Australia," said the Mayor, pointing out that the proposal is to stage this youth based agricultural event at the Moss Vale Showground and the Moss Vale Livestock Selling Centre. "The flow-on effect to the local community would be terrific and the benefits to local students of agriculture mixing in this forum with other students from across the country would be enormous," said Councillor Gair. "I wish the local organising well with their submission to host this outstanding event and commend them efforts to provide a really worthwhile opportunity for the youth of Australia to learn more about our important agricultural industry, while still having a bit of fun." Scott Vale from the Angus Youth Roundup Committee said the organisers were delighted with the huge response from participants at the recent Canberra Youth Roundup. "The Angus Roundup gives young people a chance to learn more about the beef industry and demonstrates the importance of producers and researchers who keep the industry functioning, whether it is running a property or producing a vaccine to combat disease," he said. One of the local organisers, Ian Scandrett, who runs Angus cattle on his Werai property said, "This will be a great event for youth and our Shire. Moss Vale and the Showgrounds will get a timely boost". Councillor Jim Mauger agrees, saying the day at the Moss Vale saleyards for the young visitors will be very worthwhile. "We need to support our rural base and I am very keen to see farming promoted to youth and the wider community," he said, suggesting events like the Angus Youth Roundup mean, "visitors buy local, we spend local and activity helps support jobs in Wingecarribee."
