Draft Wingecarribee Bicycle Plan on exhibition

Comment on draft plan to steer bike facilities.

Wingecarribee residents can have their say on bicycle paths and facilities, with the council releasing its draft Bicycle Strategy 2008-2018 for public consultation from today.

Road Safety Officer, Charmaine Cooper said the strategy brought the council up to date on the changing needs of cyclists and would set Council’s agenda for the next ten years.

“We’ve seen more housing developments in the area, the emergence of climate change and soaring petrol prices — factors that have all put sustainable transport into sharp focus,” she said. “The bicycle plan could assist to reduce car dependency and promote active and healthy lifestyles in the southern highlands.

Ms Cooper said “The development of local bike trails and more bicycle lanes will be part of the plan to provide effective bike routes to shopping centres, workplaces and recreation reserves. The plan will also confirm the issues and routes critical to development of cycling in the highlands and determine which projects best satisfy the needs of the community.”

Ms CooperWhile the initial draft of the strategy was developed following a workshop with cycling advocates and government agencies, Ms Cooper said she was keen to hear the general community’s views regarding the plan.

The draft Wingecarribee Bicycle Strategy is on public exhibition until 5pm Wednesday 13 August after which it will be reviewed in light of the comments received before a final plan is presented to Council for adoption.

The document and associated maps can be viewed on the Council website or residents are encouraged to provide online feedback and participate in voting and public discussions at the ‘Bang the Table’ website.
