Business to Tread Lightly in the RegionIn a move to assist businesses in the Illawarra and South Coast regions to become more sustainable and as a result reduce their ecological footprint, an initiative called Business Treading Lightly was launched in Albion Park last week. The launch was attended by Wingecarribee Shire Mayor Gordon Lewis, accompanied by Council's Environment and Health manager Andrew de Montemas. "Businesses are being offered the opportunity to access advice and support to take their business operations to the next level," said Mayor Lewis, explaining that advice will be provided by technical experts primarily in the areas of strategic planning risk management; waste, water, energy, biodiversity, stakeholder engagement, supply chain and adapting to climate change. "This advice will enable businesses to obtain competitive market advantage by implementing strategies that not only have a positive effect on the financial bottom line, but will also have a positive effect on environmental performance through process efficiency," he said, mentioning other flow on benefits such as increased stakeholder satisfaction. "The process will include a commitment from business and a diagnostic assessment of current business practice which will highlight opportunities for improvement and financial savings, as well as develop sustainability action plans," he said, pointing out that training and mentoring would be involved, as well as opportunities to join business clusters to knowledge share, learning ideas from others to implement in their own business. "At the moment the project is addressing the aged care industry, then once established will move onto service clubs and then onto industrial precincts," said Councillor Lewis, who confirmed that all of the Southern Group of Councils have pledged their support. "A number of project officers have been recruited already. The program has kicked off in Wollongong and soon our Council's environmental officers will have the opportunity to be trained and mentored so they gain the skills and capacity to undertake similar work outside of this project," he concluded, urging local business to get on board with this initiative when they get the opportunity.
