The Southern Highlands Chapter Of the Fellowship of First Fleeters
Paul has worked with Mitchell Library's Australiana collections since 1973 and was curator of Manuscripts from 1986 to 2001. He has published on archives administration and various aspects of the State Library's collection. He was President of the Australian Society of Archivists, 1991-1993.
His annotated edition of Joseph Bank's journal on Endeavour, 1768-1771, was published in 1998.
He was curator of the exhibition Matthew Flinders: the Ultimate Voyage which opened at the State Library in 2001 and travelled nationally, 2002-2003. His annotated edition of Flinders' letters Matthew Flinders: personal letters from an extraordinary life was published in 2002. He curated the national travelling exhibition Miles Franklin: A Brilliant Career? Which opened at the State Library in 2004 and travelled nationally from 2004-2005. He published and annotated edition of Franklin's diaries in 2004. He curated the exhibition First sight: the Dutch mapping of Australia, 1606-1697 which was on show at the State Library March-June 2006. He curated the exhibition Bound for Glory: Exquisite Books of Frence Pacific Voyages which was on show in the State Library's Picture Gallery from 23 October 2006 until 25 February 2007. He curated the exhibition A Grand Obession: the DS Mitchell story which was on show at the State Library's Picture Gallery from 18 June until 30 September 2007.
He is at present preparing an annotated edition of the original handwritten journal and logbook of William Bligh kept on the HMS Bounty, 1787-1789, for publication by Allen & Unwin.
In 2003, He was awarded the Centenary of Federation medal for services to libraries.
