Procedures for Bringing Asbestos into the Resource Recovery Centre (RRC)
Last modified: July 12, 2008 - 8:38 PM
Asbestos has been used in more than 3000 products and the only real way to tell if a product is asbestos is by manufacturer's stamp or laboratory testing.
If there is any doubt, the product will be deemed to be asbestos and the procedures outlined below must be followed: All asbestos brought into the RRC must:
- Be well wrapped in approved impermeable heavy duty plastic (min 0.2mm), sealed with tape to ensure no asbestos escapes
- Have no evidence of asbestos on the outside of the packaging
- Be packaged so it can be lifted by a single person, or by a forklift.
- Be inspected by RRC staff prior to acceptance
Quantities over 200 kilograms should only be transported by a licensed asbestos removal contractor: Refer to DECC Website
- It is possible to get materials certified as asbestos-free, prior to removal, through an authorised certifier. Documentary evidence will need to be submitted to the RRC at time of disposal.
- To ensure compliance, all loads of mixed building waste and other loads with the potential for contamination will be inspected before disposal.
- Any loads not complying with the above will be rejected.
