QBL of SustainabilityLast modified: September 11, 2009 - 12:27 AM
Sustainability is a long term vision aiming at the continual improvement of resource use and management Sustainable solutions are achieved through the integration of economic, environmental, social and governance values. By utilising these values to make conscious decisions to efficiently use resources we can protect limited resources for future generations. These four values are referred to as the Quadruple Bottom Line (QBL) of considerations required to make sustainable decisions. Wingecarribee Shire Council has taken the initiative to develop its decision making processes to incorporate the QBL approach in the development of policy and procedures. This is achieved through four teams that have representatives across various branches and directorates of council. These teams specifically relate to the QBL approach and are represented in monthly meetings to discuss in parallel policy and procedure issues of council, with Councils Corporate Planner acts as a link between the teams. Councils QBL program teams are: 1. Business Enterprise & Development, 2. Environmental Sustainability, 3. Lifestyle & Community and 4. Governance & Accountability. Future initiatives of sustainability for the Wingecarribee Shire Council include the application of sustainability assessments relating to resource use within the Civic Centre and Visitors Information Centre. These assessment tools were developed by the Department of Environment and Climate Change and will be assisted by the Southern Councils Group initiative Business Treading Lightly. The experience gained from the sustainability assessment tools will then be transferred into the local business community, with the support of designated council staff. Benefits of sustainable practices for local business and council include team work discussions, efficient methods of work and space allocations, reductions in energy use and costs, improved technologies, alternative choices and reduced toxicities.
