Agenda 21 is Helping Ensure a Sustainable Future

What on earth does it all mean to us?

Agenda 21 and ensuring a sustainable future are a couple of terms we hear a bit around Council, but how many people fully understand them. The honest answer would have to be not many. And that is not a criticism. It is not only a difficult concept, but also the term "sustainable future" means different things to different people. Basically Agenda 21 sprang out of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, which was the biggest gathering of Government and non Government organisations around the world, brought together to focus on the development of the world and the impact on the environment. For more than a fortnight, participants tackled the most challenging issue of our time - how to deliver a quality of life to this generation and the next, without compromising the very environment which provides the raw materials that allow humankind and all of the other organisms on Earth, to survive.

In practical terms, for an organisation such as Wingecarribee Shire Council, Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is about the need to create value for the Wingecarribee Community by managing environment, economic and  social aspects with good governance of not only the organisation’s activities, but encouraging actions of residents, employees and visitors to the shire.

In moving towards sustainability, we, both as an organisation and individuals,  need to take action to ensure items we value like clean air, fresh food and water, healthy environments, social equity and economic stability are maintained.
