Bushland Reserves
Within the Shire, we are fortunate enough to enjoy a number of bushland reserves and National Parks. Council manages many bushland reserves which include Mount Alexandra, Gibbergunyah, Mt Gibraltar, Mansfield, Hammock Hill, Berrima Weir, Wingecarribee River Reserve, Wingello reserve, Paddys River Reserve, Garland Rd Reserve and Boronia Park. The Council managed reserves provide a variety of habitats to support populations of native fauna and a popular recreational resource for Shire residents. The bushland in the Shire is known to have wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos, koalas, bandicoots, possums, quolls and echidnas, as well as a variety of reptiles, amphibians and birds. Wingecarribee Shire Council is well aware of the present need to protect and regenerate the areas of bushland still intact, in order to conserve the biodiversity of flora and fauna in these areas. To support this objective, a Biodiversity Study of the shire has identified the type and location of vegetation communities and has interpreted this information into a series of maps designed to help planners and landholders manage their land for optimal biodiversity. It also provides opportunities to increase the biodiversity values of the Shire through habitat improvement initiatives and to contribute to improved maintenance of the wealth of biodiversity within the area. Our reserves are accessible by the community and walking tracks are sign posted. We ask that users of our reserves, stay on the tracks, leave pets at home, minimise any disturbance to the bush and take all rubbish out with them when they leave. Maps of some of the main reserves walking tracks can be obtained from the Visitors Tourist information Centre at Mittagong or downloaded through the Link to the Southern Highlands Tourism website.
