Fees & RegistrationsLast modified: August 14, 2008 - 2:41 PM
In NSW, around 80,000 dogs and cats are lost, injured or stolen each year. Most of these are impounded and are not able to be identified. As these cannot be re-united with their owners, they may be destroyed. There are two steps to protecting your pet. Firstly, make sure your pet is identified. Puppies and Kittens must be identified by microchip from the time they are twelve weeks old. Secondly, once your animal is microchipped it must then be lifetime registered with your local Council Council will send you a Certificate of Identification for your animal after its microchip details have been entered on the NSW Companion Animals Register. You should bring this certificate with you when you pay your animal's registration fee to Council's cashier. The certificate should also accompany your registration payment if you send a cheque or money order through the mail. If you pay by credit card over the phone you need to have the certificate handy so that you can quote your animal's microchip number. Registration is required under the Companion Animals Act 1998 for all dogs and cats before they turn six months of age. The legislation provides for an on-the-spot penalty of $165 for failure to comply with the law on registration. If your animal is not desexed before it is six months old you must pay $150 to register it. If you choose to desex your animal before it turns six months the registration fee will be reduced to $40 or $15 if you are a pensioner. Proof that your animal has been desexed (e.g. a statement of sterilisation from your vet) must be provided before you can claim the reduced fee. If you are a pensioner you will also need to show Council your pension card. After you have paid for your animal's registration Council will send you a Certificate of Registration. Your registered animal will then be afforded all the protection and regulation that the NSW Government and your local Council can provide. Councils are responsible for ensuring that companion animals and their owners co-exist with other members of the community, including those who choose not to own cats or dogs. Registration fees help your Council manage the dog and cat population ensuring dangerous dogs are identified and appropriate action taken. Further information on how to register your cat or dog may be obtained from Council's Environment and Health Branch on phone 48680888. Fee Schedule for Lifetime Registration of Your Pet Un-desexed dog or cat $150 Desexed dog or cat $40 Desexed dog or cat owned by a pensioner $15 Dog or cat owned by recognised breeder $40 PLEASE NOTE: CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP/ADDRESS If you sell or give your animal away; if you change your address or other contact details; if your animal dies or has been missing for more than three days - you must notify Council.
